The Tony’s are Tomorrow!

The Tony Awards are coming upon us very soon (TOMORROW!), so with that, I would like to give everyone my predictions and preferences (for the musicals anyway).

Best Orchestrations:

Bill Eiliott and Greg Anthony Rassen, Bandstand

Larry Hochman, Hello Dolly

Alex Lacamoire, Dear Evan Hansen

Dave Malloy, Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812

Who I think should win: Dave Malloy

The music for Great Comet is so unique and intricate.  From the chaotic, noisy moments, to the softer, sweeter ballads, every song in this show is starkly different, and the orchestrations really help that.

Who will win: Dave Malloy

Best Choreography:

Andy Blankenbuehler, Bandstand

Peter Darling and Ellen Kane, Groundhog Day

Kelly Devine, Come From Away

Denis Jones, Holiday Inn

Sam Pinkleton, Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812

Who I think should win: Holiday Inn

The choreo in this show was EXPLOSIVE. Can we talk about that jump rope number?

Who will win: Probably Blankenbueler.  I think it might be a toss-up between Bandstand and Holiday Inn, but Bandstand is the more popular show, and Andy’s name is out there because he won for Hamilton last year.

Best Costume Design of a musical:

Linda Cho, Anastasia

Santo Loquasto, Hello, Dolly!

Paloma Young, Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812

Catherine Zuber, War Paint

Who I think should win: Anastasia

I thought the costumes I’ve seen for this show were breathtaking (especially that blue dress).  Also, they only got two nominations. Come on! They should at least leave with something.

Who will win: Great Comet

The costumes for this show were also fabulous, and since it’s more favored with critics, it’ll probably win.

Best scenic design of a musical:

Rob Howell, Groundhog Day

David Korins, War Paint

Mimi Lien, Great Comet

Santo Losquato, Hello, Dolly!

Who I think should win: Great Comet

The scenic design for Great Comet is incredibly immersive.  Audience members can sit on a stage that the makes them feel like they are in a Russian saloon, and each seat provides a different viewing experience.  And the chandeliers!

greatcomet

I mean, come on.

Best Original Score:

Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Dear Evan Hansen

Tim Minchin, Groundhog Day

Dave Malloy, Great Comet

Who I think should win: Dear Evan Hansen

Not only is the music soaring and emotional, but the lyrics pack a tear-jerking punch.

Who will win: Dear Evan Hansen

For the reasons I just mentioned.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical:

Kate Baldwin, Hello, Dolly

Stephanie J. Block, Falsettos

Jenn Collela, Come From Away

Rachel Bay Jones, Dear Evan Hansen

Mary Beth Peil, Anastasia

Who I think should win: Rachel

I think it’s safe to say everyone cried during Evan’s mother’s ballad about her divorce near the end of Act Two.

Who will win: Rachel

I’m sure the voters cried too.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical

Gavin Creel, Hello, Dolly!

Mike Faist, Dear Evan Hansen

Andrew Rannells, Falsettos

Lucas Steele, Great Comet

Brandon Uranowitz, Falsettos

Who I think should win: I haven’t seen enough to know which of these men I really want to win at this point, buuuut, I’m going to say Mike Faist because his character his funny and everyone loves him.

Who will win:

Definitely Mike

Best Actress in a Musical

Denée Benton, Great Comet

Christine Ebersole, War Paint

Patti Lupone, War Paint

Bette Milder, Hello Dolly!

Eva Noblezada, Miss Saigon

Who I think should win: Denée

Natasha is not an easy role to do every night, and this show is complicated, but she nails it.

Who will win: Denée

I think they’re likely to give it to someone newer.

Best Actor in a Musical:

Christian Borle, Falsettos

Josh Groban, Great Comet

Andy Karl, Groundhog Day

David Hyde Pierce, Hello, Dolly!

Ben Platt, Dear Evan Hansen

Who I think should win: Platt

Anyone who who rises to the challenge of playing an anxious and depressed character and nails it deserves this award.  Also, I’ve heard this role involves a lot of crying, snot, and spit.

Who will win: Platt

Best Musical:

Groundhog Day

Come From Away

Dear Evan Hansen

Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812

Who I think should win: Dear Evan Hansen

This is a beautifully written show with a timely message.  I think it needs to be heard.

Who will win: Dear Evan Hansen

I didn’t get to everything, but those are my predictions.  Fingers crossed
